The Ghumūqī Project

The Ghumūqī Project will scan, catalogue, and prepare for long-term preservation all the manuscripts in the collection of ʿAlī al-Ghumūqī (1878-1943, better known in some contexts by his Soviet name Ali Kaiaev), a major figure in modern Daghestani intellectual history, whose oeuvre encompasses an astonishing range of genres, languages, contexts, and cultures. We will also summarize the entire holdings of the collection in a written report. This will be the first externally funded endeavor to survey, digitize, and catalog a private collection anywhere within Daghestan. The successful completion of this project will facilitate research on other private manuscript collections within contemporary Daghestan.
